Drone based surveillance system to be launched in Indian Railways |
On August 18, 2020, ministry of Railways announced that drone based surveillance system will be introduced for the purpose of railway safety.

Railway Protection Force has so far procured drones at a cost of Rs. 32 lakh. The drones will be implemented in Central Railway, South Eastern Railway, Central Railway and South Western Railway.
About Drones
To implement this monitoring, the Ministry has procured Ninja UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle). Drones are capable of video streaming and real-time tracking.Drone Categories in India
Registration of all categories of drones except nano category is necessary. The categories of drones in India are as follows:
- Nano: less than or equal to 250 g
- Micro: Between 250 g and 2 kg
- Small: Between 2 kg to 25 kg
- Medium: Between 25 kg and 150 kg
- Large: Over 150 kg

India has a specific requirement with regard to the type of drones to fly in Indian skies. Features include GPS, anti-collation light, return to home, ID plate, RFID, a flight controller with flight data logging capability.
National Drone Policy
India's National Drone Policy came into force on December 1, 2018. This is called Drone Regulation 1.0. The policy clarifies when, where and how drones can be operated in India.
Digital Sky Portal
It is an online platform for registration of drones. It is a part of an enforcement system that has been designated as no mission no takeoff. Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) is the responsible authority for allowing drones to fly in Indian skies. Permission is granted through a unique identification number. The user has to pay a fee of Rs. 1000 for obtaining uni or unmanned aircraft operator permit.
