Odisha govt launches 'Balram Yojana' for land less farmers -Top Current Affairs

The CM of odisha state has launched a scheme for landless farmers in the state under which loans will be provided to about 7 lakh landless farmers or shareholders in the state. The name of the scheme is ' Balram Yoyojana '.

Importance:-
The scheme was launched with an aim to provide financial assistance to landless farmers in the state, who are facing difficulties due to the effects of countrywide lockdown against the COVID-19 epidemic.  As a sequel to odisha government's Kalia scheme, the Balram scheme was announced by the ruling BJD government during the assembly elections in Odisha in 2019.

Balram Yojana

The loan under Balram scheme will be disbursed through joint donor groups. Loans will be available on social collateral basis. About 7 lakh farmers will be provided loan facility in the next years. For this, 1,40,000 groups of farmers have been formed, in the current financial year, 70,000 such groups of farmers will be able to avail credit, while the remaining groups will get the benefit during the next financial year.

Each of these groups will consist of 5 landless farmers. A loan of Rs 1.6 lakh will be provided to each of the farmer groups. 1,040 crore will be provided to 1,40,000 such landless farmer groups in the state.

The Balram scheme has been formulated in collaboration with the Department of Agriculture and Farmers (Government of Odisha) and National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD).
